From 1st-14th November, 1914, the 1st Shropshire Light Infantry battalion of 16 Brigade, 6th Division were in trenches at Rue du Bois, near Fleurbaix where their positions came under shell and sniper fire on a daily basis. On 10th November, the day when Richard Rogers was killed, the battalion diary recorded that four men were wounded by snipers and that there was some shelling of their positions in the afternoon.
